The Cahaba Family Global Health Fund makes it possible for our residents, fellows and faculty to take the practice of family medicine to other cultures. These life-changing trips open the door for our learners to step out in faith to practice in the new and unknown and share the heart of Cahaba, the heart of Christ.
Significance of EXPERIENCE
Entering into a new culture, whether in the US or another country, causes one to realize the limited scope of their own experiences. For medical professionals, this is a significant experience in their personal and professional growth.
Cahaba protects one month each year of our academic curriculum to a domestic-underserved, global health, or medical mission opportunity for each and every Family Medicine Resident, Fellow, and Faculty.
Discernment for the path
This opportunity allows our learners to experience and even immerse themselves in underserved cross-cultural medical care in hopes of them gaining a greater understanding of serving the “least of these.” Taking this time to step outside the culture of their home clinics, cities and countries, they have the chance to discern if they want to pursue a career in doctoring in these broken and marginalized communities.
Challenges of a growing impact
Our residency numbers have expanded in truly God-inspired ways over the last 6 years. In 2017, Cahaba had 12 residents, this number has quickly grown to 60 residents in 2023 and up to 20 fellows in 2025. It has been increasingly challenging for Cahaba to fund this amazing opportunity for our learners. We provide $1,500 each year in reimbursable funds to alleviate the burden of travel and housing while serving. This amounts to over $100,0000 committed to residents, fellows, and faculty for this amazing ministry every year.
Cahaba Medical Care has established the Global Health Fund to provide our Family Medicine Residents and Fellows with financial means to take these life changing trips. Through the Global Health Fund, Cahaba is building a community of supporters to ensure we have the necessary funding for our Family Medicine Residents and Fellows to take these life-changing trips. Cahaba Medical Care is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity. All contributions designated for specific projects shall be applied to those projects. Occasionally, we receive more contributions for a given trip than can be wisely applied to that trip. When that happens, we use these funds to meet a similar pressing need.
